Birds of paradise living in a maze

The shopping mall is the epitome of the modern-day hunter-gatherer lifestyle. The perfect setting for Birds of Paradise living in a maze. A site-specific installation that mimics modern living conditions and natural environments. The scenery is made up of both natural and chemical materials such as plastic rockfaces and concrete birds’ nests drawing a parallel between the way people and birds forage for materials to shape their environment. We collect and distribute materials to build and destroy environments and then rebuild them. This cycle of reproduction has mixed the natural world and the chemical world completely. Microscopic bits of plastic can be found in and around all living and lifeless things across the planet. The work Birds of paradise living in a maze, presents a way technology and industry can be used to control and shape the natural world, and the way the natural world can resist or incorporate technology.
